Positive Effects of the Relationship Between Winston Churchill and Franklin Roosevelt
During World War II there were three big leaders of the world, Stalin, Churchill and Roosevelt. Two of these leaders worked very closely together, creating an unmatched personal and political friendship. These two leaders were Winston Churchill, the Prime Minister of Britain, and Franklin Roosevelt, the United States President. This relationship started in 1941 thanks to the Atlantic Charter and stayed steady until Roosevelt’s death in 1945. Their strong connection may not have been as helpful to individual countries. Because of their close contact with each other, many decisions were made together, giving way to a positive global outcome, but did not serve the interests of individual countries. “The friendship that developed between Churchill and Roosevelt was not without its difficulties, and it is important not to lose site of the fact that the primary responsibility of both men was to look after national interests. This inevitably led to tensions, which at times became quite pronounced.” (FDR Library and Museum); one example of these tensions is when America entered the war.During their first meeting Churchill pressured roosevelt greatly to have them help Britain. While the U.S would have needed to enter the war anyway eventually they might have done it later without Europe’s influence. Because their goals were very different it was sometimes hard for them to see eye to eye. However because they were still allies they had to work together on anything that affected the war, while this created a very strong personal connection it limited what individual countries could do for themselves. While this relationship might not have been as successful to individual countries, it led to a more positive outcome of
