Positive Reinforcement Strategies

The teacher spoke in a soft voice while still being firm and direct. After reading the direction of the lesson the teacher asked the students questions to make sure they understood the concept she was teaching and see their level of understanding. The teacher made an effort to spread her questions around to all the students and her instructional aides passed out money which is part of the token economy system that is used in our program as part of our positive reinforcement strategy. I could see the staff modeling encouraging behavior for the students who made an effort.

For my peer evaluation, I assessed Carolyn Sutherland who is a history major here at Cal Poly. Her first speech was informative about what you can do with a history major and why it appealed to her. Her second speech was also informative, but this one focus more on the incorrect information we have been taught in our primary history classes. Both speeches she gave were easy to follow and very informational, but she did make some improvements between the first and second speech. Carolyn’s first speech was very easy to listen to.…

In Operant Conditioning some factual points that stood out to me were two-forms of positive and negative reinforcement and punishment. With the use of positive and negative reinforcement to increase or decrease a behavior could be rewarding in molding behaviors in most cases. With the use of operant conditioning, this could also be a great tool to use outside of the classroom. (Positive reinforcement) If a Childs (Behavior) is good during class (Consequence) a parent could praise them on it and treat them out, etc., for such good behavior at school and then (future behavior) the child would continue their progress of behaving in class.…

The five bonus points are added onto our test grade if we have not missed class more than three times that semester. This positive reinforcement has made me want to be present everyday for class because I know I will get the five bonus points if I do not miss this class. However, if I do miss class more than three times I will not receive the five bonus points on the test.…

    a. I believe our lesson was very developmentally appropriate for our 4 & 5 year olds. Phonological awareness is a precursor to reading. Many of the children in our class will be off to Kindergarten this year, so getting them to recognize the beginning sounds of words is developmentally appropriate. 2. Preschool Health History Observing healthy children at Crossroads Preschool was a thrilling and eye opening experience. In the four-year-old classroom with Mrs. Birch, there was quite an array of physical, mental, and social developments. The healthy child that I observed did not show any behaviors that were out of the ordinary for a four-year-old girl. I thought she was quite advanced for her age.…

During third grade, Children are really growing up. They have now experienced a couple years of elementary school and have learned the basic milestones of being children. My shadow took place within Mrs. Stevens’ third grade classroom. When I arrived the students were working within four different groups focused on the world-class outcome of creating meaning strategically in reading, writing, listening and speaking. The first group was working on vocabulary words that were written on cards, the second group was playing educational games on Slumdog, the third group was reading the previously learned vocabulary words within a story with the teacher, and the last group was drawing and writing out T-shirt designs for their recycle program.…

When I delivered the teaching session, the experience was an overall success with students showing a clear interest and engaging in the lesson (Table 1, question 10, mean 4.3). The teaching began with a clear introduction to the key learning points for the whole session (Table 1, question 5, mean 4.3), which allowed the students to understand what the session was going to entail. This was beneficial to those who needed to see the big picture to see how topics fit together[1]. I further explained that the session will be split into three sections and explained that certain learning outcomes will be covered in each section. Student feedback stated that there was “enthusiastic teaching in appropriate sized teaching bites.”…

Reflection of Class Lesson The teaching methods that I used in my lesson incorporated a variety of the Universal Design for Learning Principles and co-teaching strategies, which supported all of the students in the classroom, including students with disabilities and exceptionalities. As a means for engagement, I explained in my warm-up why learning root words is important for the students’ future lives, which relates the material to real life situations that they can relate to in their own circumstances (National Center on UDL, 2016). During the PowerPoint portion of the lesson, I called upon students by using a randomizer to actively operate the white board, which engages them by interacting with me, the mentor teacher, and their peers in…
