Positive patient outcomes are a very important part of nursing. These outcomes are achieved by providing holistic care of the patient, as well as treatment of the underlying disease. There are four different models of patient care; Total Patient Care, Primary Care, Patient-Centered Care, and Team Nursing. Each model carries a different level of risk for obtaining adverse patient outcomes. King, Long, and Lisy (2015) stated, “The organization of the work of nurses, according to recognized models of care, can have a significant impact on the wellbeing and performance of nurses and nursing teams”. Therefore the effectiveness of each model depends on the actual work conditions including work environment, organization, and staffing.

Jayadevappa and Chhatre (2011) noted, “ Patient-centered care that encompasses informed decision making can improve treatment choice, quality of care and outcomes. Patient-centered care recognizes the need for major changes in the process of care that arranges health care system around the patient”. In this model, staff is divided into teams so that knowledge and skills are distributed; this way money is not being wasted having RN’s perform skills that aides are capable of completing. By using delegation, the RN is able to evenly distribute the work based on team members’ ability; this way each person of the team feels the responsibility for each patient assigned to him or her. This model is considered to be extremely cost effective as it uses all personnel in a way that makes them feel important and needed to the team.
Team Nursing is quite possibly the most time efficient and cost effective of the four models. In Team Nursing, things get done in a very direct manner as specific tasks are assigned to each RN, LVN, and aide. This helps keep cost low as each person knows exactly what he or she are responsible for getting completed during a shift. However, this model can pose problems for both the patients and the health care team. The fragmented nature of this care makes it hard for patients to understand who is able to care for their needs, and doing repetitive tasks can be boring for personnel; leading to burnout and job
