Positive Parenting Case Study

Positive parenting is easier when the parents can understand where their child’s cognitive development is and what stage is next. As a child’s life changes, as with this scenario of a sibling being added to the family, it is imperative that parents check their parenting styles and understand how their parenting effects the child’s development. In this scenario, what worked well with one child, is now challenged with the additional member of the family beng added to the home.

As authoritarian parents, with a ridged set of rules and punishments to match (Matorell, Papalia, & Feldman, 2014), when John disobeys, John will have a tendency “to be more discontented, withdrawn, and distrustful (Matorell, Papalia, & Feldman, 2014, p.323). At the other end of the parenting scale, John’s parents might practice permissive parenting style, allowing John to be to self-regulate himself and be self-expressive (Matorell, Papalia, & Feldman, 2014). As permissive parents, Paul and Mary, provide minimal guidance and punishment, and John tends to be less immature than his peers, have less self-control, and be less exploratory (Matorell, Papalia, & Feldman, 2014). Lastly, Paul and Mary could be authoritative parents, giving John the ability to be independent and able to explore his unique interests and opinions (Matorell, Papalia, & Feldman, 2014). John will receive guidance and encouragement from his parents, with moderate discipline (Matorell, Papalia, & Feldman, 2014). In this situation, John’s parents will acknowledge his difficulty adjusting to a new sibling, but guide him to change his destructive to a more family beneficial
