Positive Long-Term Effects Of Civil Disobedience

In my opinion, Civil Disobedience has a positive long-term effect in American society. “Civil disobedience is a public, non-violent and conscientious infringement of law carried out to express opposition to law and policy” (Smith p.826). In 2015, after a mass shooting at an African American church in South Carolina, a young woman climbed up a flag pole and snatched a Confederate flag. The woman was arrested and it sparked a lot of outrage in the African American community, a lot of peaceful protesting happened around South Carolina, a few days later. The woman was freed and the state government announced that they will be removing every Confederate flag in South Carolina. That is an example of civil disobedience; someone peacefully broke
