Positive Influences

Going through these years have been great. Along with the positive influences of my parents, peers, and coaches I have been able to boost my self-esteem and become a better person. Starting high school made me understand that if I wanted to prosper I would have to change my mindset and pick up positive habits. My parents showed me no matter what you’re going through in your personal life, you must stay centered and always stay true to yourself. Coach Aiken showed me that taking breaks during stressful periods is good to gather my emotions and give whatever it is another try. Within those years I’ve realized that obstacles are meant to be jumped over and that challenges are part of your life and that life has its moments; it’s all about moving

High school was either going to help me make it or break it. Bell High School was not among the top high schools in my district. It was known for its high drop out rates, teen pregnancies, and gang violence. As I rushed to school attempting to finish my homework because I was not able to finish while babysitting, I always herd “Hey come take a hit “or “ look at this new product, try it out”, we all wanted to succeed, but nobody wanted to put in the time and effort to divert us from the wrong paths. Unfortunately, this led may students towards drug addictions and gang violence.…

As my high school career is coming to an end it has subsequently made me look back at the past four years in remembrance. Through those years I can see myself being molded into the young man I am today, and I will say I wouldn’t go back and change any of it. Through two moments in my high school career, I found who I was and made me a better man so that I can have a sustainable future. One experience was actually during one of my lowest moments in high school; the time I cheated on a Chemistry test. I've always been stellar at chemistry, but my peers in my class weren’t as much.…

In Ian Frazier’s essay “In Praise of Margins,” he sees marginal places and activates valuable. The very word marginal to Ian Frazier has a simple meaning of a “negative tinge” (Frazier) where it is defined as actions and decisions that are non-goal oriented, or without purpose. In Frazier’s Own life, a marginal activity and a place for him and his friends were out in the woods as it was there “part-time address, destination, purpose, and excuse” (Frazier). However, growing up Frazier and his friends had the woods as their marginal activity which was often seen by society as unbeneficial. But, from an academic perspective, I agree with Frazier that marginal activates are important.…
