Positive Impacts Of Tourism

According to the Oxford dictionary tourism is the commercial organization and operation of holidays and visits to places of interest. The Cambridge dictionary mentions that tourism is the business of providing services such as transport, places to stay, or entertainment for people who are on holiday. The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) indicates that tourism comprises the activities of people travelling to and staying in places outside their usual environment for not more than one consecutive year for leisure, business and other purposes. I believe that tourism is the activities of a person travelling to and staying in places outside their usual environment for not more than a limited time period for leisure and other purposes. These visits to other countries are to be temporary and short term. The Oxford dictionary mentions that culture is the arts and other manifestations of human intellectual achievement regarded collectively. It is also the ideas, customs and social behavior of particular people or society. Locals are to copy the lifestyles of the tourists which would lead to a loss of culture and traditions. Also the crime rate is to increase in the country as locals would be introduced to new activities. E.g. the usage of alcohol in the Maldives is restricted as tourism introduces this. Due to the increase of tourism the spread of diseases are evident among locals and tourists as well. Some of my peers come to an agreement that the aspects of the culture and the new traditions that tourism has brought about should be balanced.
