Foods high in sugar and saturated fat may have exactly the opposite effect, causing sugar levels to spike and crash, which leads to increased fatigue. Dehydration is associated with many medical problems including extreme fatigue and disorientation. Seniors should drink at least eight, 8-ounce glasses of water a day. This amount needs to increase if they are sweating, taking diuretics, or consuming foods or drinks with diuretic properties, such as caffeine and alcohol.
Sniff away your fatigue. Many studies have found that just the smell of cinnamon or peppermint can give the brain a quick pick-me-up. A cinnamon or peppermint candy adds the benefit of the flavor enhancing the smell. Some seniors find that carrying a small vial of peppermint or cinnamon oil does the trick. For a special treat, ask a home health aide to soak a number of toothpicks in cinnamon oil and then put them in a sealed vial. Chewing on a toothpick is fun, good for the teeth, and the cinnamon oil creates a spicy flavor and strong scent to give that extra boost of
