The topic of p.e.d’s in sports has and will be a major aspect in sports as well as a taboo. It is currently a hot issue in all major professional sports, anyone at the top of a professional sport has at some time or another used performance enhancing drugs or has seriously considered it. When athletes are at a point where they cannot achieve anymore success, using a banned with the mere consequence of a suspension for six months to one year seems very tempting for most. Many sports have adopted anti-doping policies and organizations, such as The World Anti-Doping Agency their code declares a drug illegal if it is performance enhancing, if it is a health risk, or if it violates the “spirit of sport”. An example of the potential benefits is “Using drugs to cheat in sport is not new, but it is becoming more effective. In 1976, the East German swimming team won 11 out of 13 Olympic events, and later sued the government for giving them anabolic steroids.” (Longman, J, 2004). Although they are considered unfair if one side is using them if all sides use them, they become an effective tool at reaching peak performances. The morals of the athletes using p.e.d’s is contained within the mindset of a superhuman performance, at any cost. Training aims to bring out the greatest potential you could possibly ascertain. Anabolic steroids should be available for use by athletes, this can lead to an overall increase in performance for all athletes. There are many positive effects of anabolic steroid use such as an increase in muscle mass, with this athletes can go above and beyond what they ever expected. Using steroids with the proper instruction from a physician is not dangerous and there are many doctors who use anabolic steroids to help clients outside of the professional sports industry. However, the long term abuse of steroids can lead to many of the health dilemmas people associate with the use of steroids. Steroids support the process of muscle building and repair, they can assist in weight training and performance on and off the field. The illegal use of anabolic steroids is five to one hundred times higher as compared with the dose prescribed by a doctor for medical problems. This leads to the many misconceptions that follow the abuse of steroids, by people who do not receive the proper physician
