The problem begins with prison itself. John Gleissner, a graduate of Vanderbilt in law, writes, “For many decades, the U.S. recidivism rate has hovered around two-thirds or 70 percent. In other words, our correctional methods don 't rehabilitate very well” (Gleissner). The recidivism rate is above half, which proves prison needs a reform. However, a prison reform is just the beginning; society must begin to change.Upon their release, society’s treatment of prisoner is an aid to their return to prison. Ex-inmates are still treated as criminals and are not given the second chance they earned. And, while these factors are to blame, so is the criminal lifestyle. Kat Ascharya, a researcher of the prison lifestyle, writes, “Technology not only teaches the proper use of electronic media, but also strengthen all-important ties to families and communities, creating a network to support them once they get out of prison” (Ascharya). Prisoners often lose connections with family members and technology can work to keep this connection which is essential to keep families together. Family ties are essential to giving prisoners a reason to work to stay out of prison. Teaching inmates how to properly use technology, instead of keep all forms of technology from them, encourages them to act independently and be prepared to re-enter society. Technology allows for prisons to be similar to a more realistic environment which also helps to rehabilitate them. Not only is technology use beneficial to inmates it also saves taxpayers money. Matthew Muniz, program manager at Alameda County Prison, says, “Jails are energy intensive operations and will continue to be the focus of efforts in reducing costs. Robotics in general can significantly reduce the cost of solar installations, thereby making solar even more cost-effective” (Ascharya). Technology is used in prisons to deliver meals and fold laundry. By using technology to save money, funds can be used to support programs and other beneficial necessities. Allowing technology in prison can help to implement solutions that can
