Quitting a harmful habit can have many positive effects. Smoking cigarettes is one of those harmful habits. Quitting smoking is not an easy goal to accomplish. The reason why it is difficult to quit smoking is because of one of the many chemicals in cigarettes is nicotine. According to an article on NYtimes.com, “Scientists have found, for instance, that nicotine is as addictive as heroin, cocaine or amphetamines, and for most people more addictive than alcohol”. This is just one of the many reasons why people smoke. By smoking you are impacting your life in a negative way, so by quitting you are improving the quality of your life. The positive effects of quitting smoking include health benefits, financial benefits, and social benefits.
Stopping smoking is beneficial to your health. When a person stops smoking they cough less and, breathe better. Smoking also affects your physical appearance. Smoking can cause your face to have more wrinkles, and stain your teeth yellow. Over time an ex-smoker’s sense of smell would get stronger, and they will have better chance at conceiving children. A person’s health would be vastly improved, and they would live longer. A person who quits smoking will be able to breathe better, not get tired, and they will also physically look better. Depending on how many cigarettes a person smokes they could be spending large amounts of money every year.. A smoker who quits will have substantially more money to spend on other things. People in general do not like to be around other people who smoke because they smell like cigarettes and do not want to be harmed by secondhand smoke. An individual who quits smoking can have a better social life by not stinking like cigarettes, not coughing, and not negatively affecting other people’s health.
