Negative influence of precarious work on individuals:
There are many effects of precarious work towards individuals and these effects could be passed on to their family and community. One of the most common effects is the financial crisis they suffer from every single day without fail as they are earning very little and have a lot to pay. Hence their children might have a limited childhood, lack of proper education or some might even not go to school and sometimes, they might be homeless here and there if they are unable to pay their rent punctually. Harvey and Fleming (2008) explained that employees tend to overlook their health concerns as they only spend their salary on food, rent and shopping while leaving out health. In addition on a survey done by Parker and colleagues (2002), it was found that there was a negative relation between temporary work and employees mainly due to work overload which affected their health. According to Cuyper, Isaksson and Witte (2005), they argued that there are no policies in place for temporary workers in UK but changes in 2002 saw that temporary workers and permanent workers are to be treated fairly in all terms. A change for precarious workers was that employees who have been holding the same job for four years in a row have the right to become a permanent employee. It is also known by researchers that women holding precarious jobs tend to be very vulnerable (Menéndez, 2007) as they might get called for work but that day, perhaps her child is sick and she cannot take up the job. It could mean limited time for family and friends when they go for work and work as long as they can to earn the maximum income. Sometimes individuals might be holding several jobs and in the midst of juggling everything on his plate, he might overlook his family and let them feel neglected. There is no work-life balance here as mentioned by Harvey and Fleming (2008) on work-life balance which is to adjust your work and home priorities to ensure that you are able to combine your work, family and interests for a happier life. Although Harvey and Fleming (2008) suggested allowing employees to do job-sharing and teleworking, it might affect different workers differently depending on their background. After a prolong period of time working this schedule, many workers tend to feel that no matter how much he works, he never seems to be progressing. When he starts having low morale, his performance might start to decline and this could eventually lead to him not being called for work
