Over decades, the society made marijuana seem as a dangerous and addictive drug that can harm the body such as causing lung cancer. In Canada, the legalization of marijuana can be a controversial topic with many different opinions. However, the truth about the drug is slowly coming out as studies show how it can have a positive impact. Marijuana, also known as ‘weed’, ‘pot’, ‘herb’, ‘dope’ and many other slang terms is a combination of dried out leaves, stems, flowers and seeds that comes from a cannabis plant (UW, 2013). However, there has been an increase on the topic and more individuals are discussing about it. Marijuana should be legalized for medication as it can achieve a better health style. It has helpful effects on pain control, appetite, mood and other symptoms. Moreover, marijuana is a way safer product for social and recreational interactions than other substances. Lastly, marijuana can create a large industry that can increase the economy and make it more successful. As of now, the federal health minister Jane Philpott have stated that there are plans on legalizing marijuana in spring of 2017. Justin Trudeau has also voiced his opinion in favor of legalization. He states that “Canada’s current system of marijuana prohibition does not work”, and is willing to change the system in a way that can come useful to the country (Liberal Party, n.d.). Over, 52000 Canadian citizens including smokers and non-smokers are supporting the idea of the legalization (Liberal Party, n.d.). Canada will continue to push forth on the legalization which can impact the country in many different ways and change the country in a positive manner. If more research would be done to the legalization of marijuana, the worlds perspective could be changed.
