Positive Effects of Marijuana for Cancer Patients Marijuana, commonly known as cannabis, has been around for thousand of years. Many ancient civilizations have been exhumed and found marijuana in medical practices. For example, the Egyptians had used it to treat sore eyes, and the Indians had mixed marijuana and milk to create a primitive aesthetic. Moreover, the Greeks had found a way to retrieve earaches with the plant 's properties (Webley 1). Marijuana also has several species, but two of the especial species are cannabis sativa and cannabis indica. It is often related to cancer patients due to the natural features that help to relieve some of the most uncomfortable symptoms colligated with the disease. Studies show that the endocannabinoid system, the body’s natural cannabinoid system, plays an important role in managing anxiety. Cannabinoid receptors are highly concentrated in certain parts of the brain that are responsible for anxiety, including the amygdala and hypothalamus. Studies also show that patients experience higher levels of anxiety when cannabinoid receptors are blocked by drugs such as rimonabant. Likewise, regular cannabis users report that marijuana helps to reduce their anxiety levels. Research has also showed the endocannabinoid system to the extinction of bad memories as well as the growth of new brain cells, which is believed to improve anxiety levels (Can Marijuana). Although cannabis has many positive effects on cancer patients. However, it still have some negative effects that like many other drugs. Some patients have experience with increased heart rate, decreased blood pressure, dizziness or lightheadedness, and fainting. It can cause mood changes that people feel uncomfortable. It can also worsen depression or other mental illness. Some Patients have also reported problems with dry mouth and trouble with recent memory.
