There is a huge number of diets which can help a person to lose weight in a short term and Atkins diet, also known as Low Carb diet, has been applied for decades. In 2003, Dr. Gardner and Balise from Stanford University, California conducted a study comparing Atkins, Zone, Ornish, and LEARN Diets for changing in weight among overweight woman. They experienced randomly in 311 free-living, obese women; divided them into four groups and let them try four diets. The results demonstrated a significant difference: Atkins group lost 4.7 kilograms, Zone groups lost 1.6 kilograms, Ornish lost 2.2 kilograms and LEARN group lost 2.6 kilograms. Thus, Low Carb diet obviously has some certain positive effects to our health, specifically for Type 2 diabete patients. However, questions about long-term effect have been raised after the study because the lack of the main macronutrient: Carbohydrate. In the article “Low Carbohydrate diet: What are the potential short – and long – term health implications?”, M.S. Bilsborough and Dr. Crowe (2003) mentioned that one of the digestive problem in the long term is insulin response. Based on Atkins diet definition, insulin is a hormone that helps body transform carbohydrate into energy. When objects eat Low Carb diet, they consume a high amount of protein, which is basically dietary amino acids. In fact, amino acids can stimulate insulin secretion, and chicken, fish or beef, which contain chains of amino acids, can cause higher peak insulin concentration than white pasta. Consequently, insulin secretion can result to metabolic imbalance, which is promoted obesity.
