These riots resulted in a devastation in the neighborhood’s economy and public housing began to flourish. Federal housing policy reforms were intended to prioritise housing of the poorest , single mothers on welfare and the homeless. Soon the public housing of projects will soon serve as a home to over millions of people over the years. But in 2011 chicago last high rising public housing homes came tumbling down and for those who were living in the projects, there’s a piece of them that was also knocked down. The public housing destruction resulted in many low income people being forced from their homes and forced to struggle to find new affordable housing that offers equal or greater…
Like Perry, they discuss how race and economic standing factor into the decisions being made in post-Katrina New Orleans, and they focus on how the low-income community Ninth Ward has faced “chronic neglect” from city services and is victimized (Breunlin and Regis 2006: 749). They argue that actions are being taken to make today’s New Orleans population “whiter and wealthier” than it was before the hurricane and destruction (Breunlin and Regis 2006: 758) Furthermore, they explain that majority of the New Orleanian upper-class is mostly white and Republican, and that it strives to reduce the overwhelmingly black-and-constraining underclass by creating policies that intentionally undermine and displace them (Breunlin and Regis 2006: 756). Both Breunlin and Regis are Louisiana natives, and have close ties to the people and land in New Orleans, and they ask the opinions of several former residents of the Desire Public Housing Development that was “torn down in the name of ‘progress’” in the Ninth Ward and find that despite the negative connotations that often get associated with New Orleans and especially the Ninth Ward, these displaced people love the places they lived before Katrina (Breunlin and Regis 2006: 744-745, 750-751). Like Perry,…
Because of social differences, neighborhoods are not only split due to race, but they are now split between classes. Our society created social standards for each individual class and creates an invisible boundary between not only races, but classes. There are huge differences between a rich white family, and the average middle income family. These differences include how we are treated in our towns and at our jobs, how it can make a difference in whether or not we can get a loan, and it creates a boundary for the way we should be treated in our…
The multifaceted class interests defines the communities like NKO, which consist of predominantly African Americans. Since gentrification is a familiar story, in which people believe that gentrification is only about improving residents’ living standards. Pattillo’s story is different because she looks at the process of gentrification within a mixed-income community while new residents deftly negotiate their stay with the formers. I enjoyed reading about how Pattillo created gentrification as being a vicious cycle of conflicting inter-class and interracial interests and not just focusing on neighborhood improvements. Although that is very important, I found it to be more enlightening to learn about how race and social status influenced urban development as Pattillo succinctly summed it as “the politics of race and class in the city.”…
Is gentrification overall good or bad? It’s impossible to say with certainty. Like most issues, there’s positive and negative aspects. One of the biggest issues with gentrification is housing. Gentrifiers aim to rebuild and revitalize housing areas, modernizing and remodeling buildings to get them up to middle-class standard.…
While the suburbs continue to have mainly middle class and white people move out to the area, all downsized cities are left with is the huge portion of poor and minority people. With the increasing amount of Latino and Asian immigrants moving into the U.S. cities, this has been one of the main reasons as to why this movement has intensified. The new suburban growth of…
The safety and education system should be the same in all neighborhoods such as African American, low, middle, and high class. The Economist goes on by saying when raising the prices on property, it “also generates more property-tax revenue, helping to improve local service.” This makes it affordable to build “subsidized housing for the poor” (2). Understanding the points that The Economist is making but, there is not documents that show that more subsidized houses are being made to support the lower class community. Lastly, if these house are being built up but not taken care of then who is to say that gentrification will not happen to these “new” areas as…
However, we clearly see increasing signs that the benefits of urban economies are not disbursed evenly among city residents. Income inequalities continue to increase in cities with a large population, but these discrepancies only tell part of the story.” The authors go on to identify how poverty is ongoing regardless of economic increases and that “economic mobility appears blocked for many urban residents.” They state that “low-income individuals are being left out and overlooked with jobs and schools, thereby, limiting their opportunities for success and “leaving them stuck in poverty for years or even for generations.”…
In fact, poverty traps poor families in unsafe, transitional neighbourhoods that fail to meet many basic needs for the residents (Reiboldt 2001). As well, rapid demographic changes, heterogeneous communities, and immigration within transitional neighbourhoods contributes to increased poverty status for residents (Lilly et al. 2015; Reiboldt…
Alana Semuels comments on that in her article, The Resurrection of America's Slum, “ Research out this year from Harvard shows that children who moved from poor areas to more affluent had higher incomes and better educational achievements than those who stayed in poor areas ” (255). In these cases, both authors suggest that if the poor families were to move into a better environment that would help them strive and better their future for them and their kids tremendously both educationally and…
Due to the increasing amount of neighborhood being gentrified, mostly half of the community will end up being forced to adapt to the changes. Harlem, Washington Heights and Brooklyn are great examples of neighborhoods that have been affected by gentrification. Gentrification improves the community since it opens possibilities for better economic choices for people that need to improve their lives. Some might argue that it should not be allowed because human lives are affected, since displacement is a problem for the poor residents. Although gentrification definition may seem that this act is good for the community by bring more revenue and wealth into the area and decreasing the crime rate, it does have a negative…
Many commentators have claimed that this concentration of poverty has produced enormously negative societal consequences.” Written by Michael R. Diamond, these two sentences describe perfectly how public housing was used as a tool for segregation and aided in the failure of…
This issue is ambiguous and difficult to navigate, because gentrification is often framed as revitalization (Driscoll, 2017). The notion of revitalization is Eurocentric and idealistic. Revitalizers do not consider the rise in cost of living associated with infrastructural improvements, nor do they make an effort to compensate the original residents of the patch for such costs. Failure to recognize such implications can further the issue by removing low-income housing as an option for citizens, forcing residents to relocate to places where they can afford to live. Gentrification has a negative impact on citizens of low socioeconomic status, and due to economic racial disparities, this in turn leads to further segregation of…
As this continues, more and more lower income residents who also happen to be people of color are displaced to the more disinvested…
1.3. Causes of Slums: The rapid urbanization accompanied by industrialization has resulted in the growth of slums. The shortage of land for housing, the high prices of land beyond the reach of urban poor and a large rural migrations to the cities fuelling the development of slums. These slums give rise to many problems in the urban areas [ ].…
