I stared at the paper, and my only thoughts were of how awful it looked. You couldn’t even tell what it was; it was simply different shades of gray and black in misshapen blobs. But while I absorbed my classmates ' words, that described it with different terms and picked out interesting pictures, I let go of my predetermined ideas of good and bad and I looked at the drawing with a deeper understanding. My mind slowly developed a fondness for it, I began appreciating those misshapen forms, the strokes and lines began leading my eyes on an adventure through the drawing. The arts can have many positive effects on the brain and its development. There are many things that can be considered an art that are important in education. Such as, drawing, painting, dancing, poetry, plays and music, just to name a few. Each kind of art has its own individual benefits, but they also all have common ones as well. Unfortunately, the arts are a subject in school that doesn’t gain much credit. Most schools merely provide art classes because of state requirements. This is a serious issue, therefore, I argue, in order to increase young brain development, improve mental health and academic performance, schools need to reawaken the importance of the arts in education. Students should be exposed to and taught many styles of art and allowed to explore art in mediums of their choice. They should have numerous opportunities to expand their horizons in both interest and learning.
