Young adolescent sexual activity is a widespread problem the country faces. The United States government; Congress, has helped fund or a better term spent billions of dollars over the course of twenty-five years to abstinence-only-till-marriage programs. Nevertheless when taking a closer look at the many reviews and articles over the abstinence programs, their effectiveness in the younger generation is remarkably lacking. These programs that solely focus on practicing abstinence have not been shown to affect teenager sexual behavior. One of the worst ways a school, and in this case a Texas school district, could teach their students on Sex Education: Is by shaming their pupils into staying pure until marriage (Klein, Education Compares, par.1) and with these teachings the instructor can spin any tale they want. It doesn’t have to be medically precise. When instructors teach that youths who are sexual active represent despicable beings, then we crossed into the field of mental and verbal maltreatment. So didactics about how a student is suddenly soiled like chewed gum or even a dirty peppermint patty in Mississippi, also dirty toothbrushes have been used as an example. Telling these students that men and women want to marry a pure individual, just as someone would want a brand new toothbrush or stick of gum (Klein, Mississippi Sex, par.9) is definitely not the correct way to go about teaching Sex Ed. This this teaching of abstinence is extremely harmful to the ones being taught that this is how they should learn and live.
