During my sophomore year of high school I received my first piece of technology, an IPod touch fourth generation. I finally fit in and could finally keep up with friends and family members over social media. After spending a few days on social media and following all of the celebrities, friends, and family members I found out what the craze was about. Liking, following, tweeting, re-tweeting, posting, and pictures is what all the hype was about, knowing that a person can search anyone up and see their life through their profile. When doing work many people look for a distraction and getting on social media is the perfect one as Hughes states, “It has been suggested that Conscientious individuals are inclined to avoid SNS as they promote procrastination and serve as a distraction” (Hughes 552). There is something new always happening on social media and it is more interesting than doing work. You can end up spending hours on social media searching for anything and everything. You loose productivity when on social media because you loose yourself in connecting with hundreds of people and then you find everyone else life more interesting than your work. Social media is entertaining and when doing work entertaining sounds more fun. While some individuals might recognize theses trends of communication in social media is negative they might question asking is social media not bettering our society?
