Martin Seligman believes, "Positive thinking is the notion that if you think good thoughts, things will work out well. Optimism is the feeling of thinking things will be well and be hopeful." Many people live their lives on this definition of optimism. When defining optimism, it is clear to see everyone has their own perspective. Whether that perspective is positive or negative determines if a person is an optimist. In essence, optimism can be defined as a positive concept possessing hopefulness and confidence through all aspects of life. To begin to define optimism, it must be clear that optimism is a way of life. As Lucille Ball once said, "One of the things I learned the hard way was that it doesn 't pay to get discouraged. Keeping busy and making optimism a way of life can restore your faith in yourself." Optimistic people believe that if you go through life with a positive attitude, you will be met with pleasant and happy feelings. In a whole, people who live optimistic lives are generally more successful and happy. Optimism is beneficial to health as well as social relations. The fear of socializing is non-existent to optimistic people because they feel confident in themselves to speak out. They are the complete opposite of the pessimist, who are people who live in …show more content…
Optimistic people naturally have the ability to think positive. If a person is not a natural optimist, there are ways that person can practice to become an optimist. It requires forcing oneself to work at having a positive outlook. It requires changing the mind to think positively over negatively. If a negative thought enters the mind, one has to be aware of it. Then the negative thought can be replaced with a constructive one. If the thought returns, it can be replaced with a positive one. Eventually the mind will learn to think positively and will ignore the negative
