Wouldn’t it be great if the world were a utopian society? Where there were no conflict whatsoever. Sadly, we live in a world with loads of conflict; for example, in "Anne Frank Diary of a Young Girl." Anne has to face the Nazis, or in "Dear Mrs. Breed." Louis Ogawa living a portion of her childhood in an internment camp. A positive attitude is the best way to respond to conflict because it increases mental and physical health, it reduces stress, and makes life much more enjoyable.

For instance, “I don't think I'll ever feel at home in this house, but that doesn't mean I hate it” (Frank). Anne may not like her new home, but still tries to make the best out of it which makes the experience a great deal better than it may seem. By the same token, “The Annex is an ideal place to hide in. It may be damp and lopsided, but there's probably not a more comfortable hiding place in all of Amsterdam. No, in all of Holland” (Frank). Making her life rosier once again, Anne chooses a positive attitude to boast about a run down annex she calls home. She does this by being positive even in the horrific situation she is in. In addition, “This trip has made me realize the wonderful work of nature. Her delicate work in shaping the stone mountains, the beautiful coloring of the surroundings—it seemed as if I was looking at the picture or a painting of a genius.” (Oppenheim). Being placed in a Japanese Internment Camp, Louis Ogawa is being positive even in unfavorable conditions, and seeking out the light in the dark. All in all, both Anne and Louis face challenging conflicts, and though they are being discriminated against they still seem to appear jubilant in dreadful times all because they chose a positive …show more content…

Anne’s diary begins on her thirteenth birthday, June 12, 1942, and ends shortly after her fifteenth. At the start of her diary, Anne describes fairly typical girlhood experiences, writing about her friendships with other girls, her crushes on boys, and her academic performance at school. Because anti-Semitic laws forced Jews into separate schools, Anne and her older sister, Margot, attended the Jewish Lyceum in Amsterdam. The Franks had moved to the Netherlands in the years leading up to World War II to escape persecution in Germany.…

I chose to read an article by Lesley Alderman titled, “The Year of Conquering Negative Thinking.” A lot of people are guilty of lingering around negative thoughts more than positive ones and it can get in the way of true happiness. Due to this common scenario, Lesley’s article mainly details all the steps that need to be taken in order to make this year, and even the years to come, all about less negative thoughts. As the saying goes, the first step to solving your problem is admitting that there is in fact a problem.…

Communication Journal: The Science of Happiness Steven Parton’s article, “The Science of Happiness: Why Complaining is Literary Killing You”, attempts to explain how our brains are influenced by our view of situations and the attitudes of the people around us. To a great extent, Parton’s argument is logical and practical and presents some useful lessons not only about how to enhance our well-being, but also how to communicate appropriately particularly in the world of business. The important and practical aspect about the article is that the attitudes we surround ourselves with reshape our brain. Attitudes associated with pessimism, melancholy, regret, fear, and depression among other emotional elements tend to have adverse effects on our…

The poem “Choices” by Nikki Giovanni shows the impact of positive thinking. An example from “Choices” would be the first stanza, “If I can’t do what I want to do then my job is to not do what I don't want to do”. The world isn’t fair and neither is life, but opportunity is. If you don’t like where you ended up it can still change if make more opportunities for yourself and avoid things that you know are harmful. Later in the second stanza of “Choices” it states, “It’s not the same but it’s the best I can do”.…
