Wild: “Positive, Negative, and Wild Life”
To understand the message of the essay. positive and negative influence are something that must be learned and understood. Positive influences are someone or something that helps people make good decisions. Positive influences are often caused by the characters that are portrayed as heroes, good citizens, and etc. Negative influences are someone or something that caused people to make the wrong decision. Negative influences are often caused by the characters that were portrayed as villains and other things of that nature. The characters in Wild served as positive or negative influences in the story; as a case in point, Paul is positive, Joe is negative, and Cheryl’s mom is a combination of both.
First, Cheryl’s mom is a combination of both because she caused both positive and negative events to happen in Cheryl’s life. Her mom’s negative influences were her death and some of the choices she in life. When Karen, Cheryl, and Leif were growing up, she brought home men named Killer, Dobbie, and etc. Another negative thing she did was smoke pot on an occasional, but regular basis. For instance, Joe getting her to do heroin was a negative influence and his negative portrayal as a drug addict and indirectly a homewrecker shows how bad was for Cheryl’s life. Paul helping her is a positive influence and his positive portrayal as good positive and all round nice guy gives the reader a good view on one of the positives in Cheryl’s life. Her mother’s death was a negative influence, but her love for children is a positive influence. She is portrayed as a loving mother who tries to do right by children, but she mistakes along the way.
