Positive And Negative Effects On Presidential Elections

With the recent election just ending and with so many political ads all over the place there is always the question, do the political ads help or hurt the candidate. I think it hurts them more than it helps them. I believe that the voters seeing all the negative ads gets them ticked off and vote for the person they planned to vote for already. For example, Donald Trump spent $238.9 million through mid-October, compared with $450.6 million by Clinton's. We know that Donald Trump won the election and Hillary Clinton lost. We don’t have spending records from Mid-October to election day so those numbers could change a little. We can go to the 1964 election with President Johnson vs Barry Goldwater. The negative ads show the worse of them and that’s what the people are going to remember and that will not be good for them if they do win the election they will just remember what they saw on T.V about them. The whole aspect of political ads is outrageous and the ads just tell us how bad the other candidate is and hardly tell us what they are going to do they just tell us that they didn’t do the bad thing the other candidate did. The candidate in general could be a good person and these ads could be damaging for their whole career. The candidate knows what they are getting into but mudslinging has become way to common and heaven forbid a candidate hurts a candidate’s feelings. With the ads f negativity, it will give a negative view of the government and the people will just think if they are this one sided in public imagine in private and they could lose all trust in the whole governmental process. This is bad because if there is no trust in the government then the people will just not care what happens and be politically involved. Per the pew research center when it comes to voter turnout for the leader of their country the U.S is 56 % and that’s ranked 26th in the world of developed countries. This shows right here that these ads do not help the political process of our country. When the people don’t trust their government that is when that country is weak. Strength is not based on numbers but how unified a country is. With the mudslinging, political ads, the people see no trust at all and just see all politicians as crooks and we don’t need that for our
