Media is a versatile tool used for education, news, and enjoyment. The types of enjoyment sought can vary from positive and pleasant reactions or negative effects. Video game usage is a controversial topic because while it provides entertainment, it also affects cognitive thinking, influences, and overall behavior. Trent Moore’s article, “What happens when you play video games for too long” outlines both positive and negative effects of media entertainment.

Moore describes video games are “awesome”; they help improve critical thinking and hand-eye coordination and may improve brain activity. The enjoyment of playing might convince gamers to overlook the unpleasant effects. But like all things, Moore states, it comes down to pacing and moderation. Too much, like too much of water or sleep, can take you down, he states.

Playing, specifically online, encourages people interact with others including those in different regions. A report by the American Psychological Association (APA) found that 70% of users play with at least one friend and altogether, millions unite to play in virtual games such as World of Warcraft. Those virtual players ultimately build online social communities where they also learn team building skills such as decision making, leading, and building trust. As previously mentioned, video games affects brain activity with potential of improving the areas of memory formation, strategic planning, and motor skills. The cause is because video games present challenging scenarios which require critical thinking and strategic planning. Surprisingly, video games, including those which are violent, can strengthen cognitive skills. Amongst children, they help develop problem-solving skills and in adolescents improve problem solving.
