He lists the extinction of animals like the cerulean warbler, air pollution, water contamination, foundation issues in homes, wells cracking, the increase of asthma, black lung, or other cancers to show the people what is happening in our county. “In 2002, the Clean Air Task Force, commissioned by the EPA, determined that coal-fired power plants account for 30,000 deaths per year.” (25). The number of children being treated for asthma in Kentucky since 2002, has risen about 50 percent. Reece gives us all these examples to put into perspective what is happening right before us. We need to make a stand. Our world is so “black and white.” We need more color. We need more changes in the communities and globally. We need to practice more sustainability. The elements of a sustainable community are clean air, planting as money trees as possible, recycle, and to be free of pollution and contamination. There are a variety of ways we can preserve the world to be more sustainable. We have solar energy, geothermal, hydropower, biofuels, and nuclear fission. Why wouldn’t anyone want to save this place we call home? We need to take care of this place for the generations beyond ours. We need to plant more trees to keep from spreading carbon. We need to recycle and reuse as many resources as we can possible. The world is changing rapidly and it’s true when I say it’s a scary thought. I don’t know what the world holds for us, but what I do know is we can start protecting it by getting involved in communities like Reece did.
