Did I Have A Positive Effect On My Life

Improved Essays
Ever noticed how quickly time fly’s by? A single day retains only twenty-four hours; ones individual life is contrived up of these single seconds, hours, and minutes. Before it’s even realized that time has passed. How that time was spent is inconsequential. I realized that no matter how that time was used; that day will come to a halt. When it ends there is a series of questions you can ask yourself. In my opinion there is one question that trumps the others. Did I have a positive effect on the world today? This question holds a very special place in my heart. Early in life I had to learn a tough lesson; I practically fell in deaths’ grasp. The lesson transpired on May 9, 2015. I had just entered my last week in high school, and excited …show more content…
Once in my car I departed for home. At the time I lived on a street called Quail Hollow; at the time it had very little lighting. This made it difficult to see down the street at night. There was also abundant amount of greenery which made sight even more difficult. I made my way down the street, and half way down I was blinded by a glaring light. All of a sudden I heard tires screech and a loud yelp. Finally I began recovering from the daze of the light, or so I though in the sheer second I had managed to crash into a tree. My car was completely totaled from the impact. Every single air bag deployed, and windshield broken as well as sunroof. I managed to open my door and walk from the car. I looked around managing to see my battery across the street using the dim street light. I saw my car wrapped around a tree. Still shaken up I sat down on the side of the road. I began to contemplate on my life; realizing I spent the day doing absolutely productive. I didn’t offer the world anything positive. I had twenty-four whole hours and I wasted them on frivolous spending. I felt a sense of relief that I was okay, but I also felt guilt in my heart. Knowing I could have offered up something better that day. I made myself a promise that night. I promised myself that I would offer the world something positive each day. Weather it was putting a smile on someone’s face, or giving them helpful advice. It could

The Path to a Higher Education “Without education, you are not going anywhere in this world” (Malcolm X). In both Frederick Douglass’ article “Learning to Read” and in Malcolm X’s article “A Homemade Education” they discuss the challenges and obstacles that they had to overcome. Frederick Douglass was a man that was born in the horrors of slavery and later became a famous abolitionist speaker in the north. As a child, I have always found joy in helping others out. After school, my friends and I would always roller skate and play street hockey for fun. I always wanted to be on Neil’s team as he was the best at roller skater out of our friend group. I remember on a Thursday evening, as the our street hockey match intensified, Neil skated aggressively and as a result ended up tripping on a rock. I saw his face clench as his elbow scraped the concrete floor.…

Sitting in the barn, I began to reminisce of my life prior to living in this village; a time when I lived with my parents near a stream, of which I can’t recall the official name. I was referred to as a socialite, as I enjoyed getting to know strangers in order to understand them and befriend them, and I used to pride myself on my judge of character, which I believed to be “top notch”, if you will, and my wanting to aid those in need. In the twilight of one winter morning, similar to that of today, however winter was in its more primitive phase, I decided to take a stroll in hopes of clearing my head before the day of work began. I noticed a man of seemingly low morale lying motionless near the stream, just staring at his reflection in the…

I am also willing to bet there are a fair amount of applicants who meet the unwritten standards needed to receive this scholarship. As an eighth grader, I had no choice but to balance out my school work, making sure to do all the chores, and taking care of my three younger siblings at home by myself. My parents would be up in the hospital taking care of my now passed grandmother, who had cancer, while I, being the oldest child in the family, had to stay home alone to take care of my younger siblings. At first it was a difficult task for my 12-year old self to handle. While I was doing my homework or studying, I would have to stop what I was doing and help my siblings on their homework. Another scenario would be me cleaning up the house, even though there were homework waiting for me on the table.…

Before even entering high school, I made a decision that would ruin the next few years. Looking back, I had no idea it would have impacted me as much as it did, but even now I still wouldn’t have changed that decision. Everything that came after that decision, no matter how difficult, shaped me into who I am today, and I was able to meet some pretty amazing people and do a few things only a handful of people can say they’ve done. In elementary school, I was in the S.C.O.P.E. (Spotsylvania County Program of Enrichment) program, my county’s way of separating out students who they considered gifted and a distraction in the classroom.…
