Poseidon's Influence On Greek Mythology

Poseidon and his two brothers are known as the major gods in Greek mythology. Before Poseidon was one of those major gods, there was only one god, Kronos. Kronos was known as the Creator and Destroyer. As time passed on, Rhea, Kronos's wife had three sons: Poseidon, Zeus, and Hades. Kronos didn't like them, and as a result, he ate them. Other legends say that Poseidon was the only son eaten, but not all his brothers and sisters shared the same fate. Rhea had tricked Kronos to eat a bird. While he was distracted, Zeus and all his brothers and sisters (Hades, Hera, Demeter, and Hestia) attacked Kronos, and his monsters or Titans. For instance, he helped in the Trojan War. In the Trojan war, Poseidon helped Greeks out, but it's also said that he did this on one occasion that he had worked against them as well. According to some sources, the war started with a god who was jealous of a wall that the Greeks had built to protect their ships. The god was worried about the Trojans wall and it would be humiliated by the Greek's wall and how it was more famous than the Trojans wall. So, they decided to try to destroy the Greek's wall. Poseidon, after seeing that this is happening, decided to intervene and encouraged troops to engage in war even though Zeus said not to engage in war. As the war progressed, Poseidon got word that the Trojans killed one of his grandsons, Amphimachus and got so angry he was going to take part in Hera's plan to deceive Zeus. So, when Zeus was asleep, Poseidon had engaged in the war leading the Greeks and as he yelled, it brought the moral of the Greek troops and led them to destroy the Trojans for good. When Zeus woke up, he saw what was happening and ordered all gods on the battlefield to retreat and Poseidon as well thought it might be best to retreat and go back into the sea where he lived (Theoi Project -
