“Poseidon is the god of the sea and rivers, creator of storms and floods, and the bringer of earthquakes and destruction”(theoi). Poseidon was given the sea to rule by his siblings. He is known as either Poseidon or Neptune and is the god of the sea. “Poseidon is commonly depicted in art as bearded with his trident, fashioned by the cyclopes and with which he would create earthquakes” (cartwright). Poseidon is a god with a lot of children and a violent family background, a lot of conflicts, and is represented by lots of different animals and items.

Poseidon has a lot of children and has a violent family background. His father Cronus was afraid of a prophecy that said that one of his own sons would overtake him. So to avoid the prophecy, every time one of his children was born he would take the child and swallow them including Poseidon. Poseidon had a violent family background because of Cronus eating him and his siblings to avoid a prophecy and then being saved by his brother and fighting Cronus to defeat him and put him in Tartarus. He also has a lot of kids such as Triton and Pegasus. Poseidon had multiple different conflicts such as the one with Athena when they had a competition on who was going to be the protector of Attica where Poseidon lost when Athena gave them the better gift with the olive tree. Another conflict was with Minos when he broke the promise of sacrificing the bull given to him by Poseidon. That caused Poseidon to punish Minos by making his wife fall in love with the bull leading to the Minotaur. Poseidon is represented by many things such as the Hippocamp, his trident, his cloak and robe, and his wreath of wild
