Similar to several other stories, the epic poem ‘Odyssey’ written by Homer uses the different archetypes to describe the characters that take part in the mythology. The Swiss psychologist Carl Jung had named and defined the twelve different archetypes, that were most commonly used in the history of literature and can still be found in tools of entertainment of all culture, for instance, in movies, books or plays. Examples of archetypes can be repeatedly found in chapters of the epic poem. For instance, in the chapter where the protagonist Odysseus faces the fearsome cyclop Polyphemus, Odysseus can be identified as the hero. The hero is the one who shows courage in challenging situations, who seeks ways to improve the world and who strives to be strong and fears to be weak.…

These stories of the great-god Poseidon also resemble some stories from the medieval times, for example Thor in “The Tale of Utgarda”. It may look like that Thor is the mightiest of all gods and will not have anyone pressuring him. however, he is still tested at every turn and sometimes he fails and sometimes he is the winner, but the constant pressure of having to excel at everything is very much alike to the worries of their loss of agency that bothers Poseidon as he also feels like excelling at all but gap between their belief and their reality is quite big. In “the tale of Utgarda” when Thor is asked to take on challenges that Loki throws at him, he takes them without giving it a second thought and is reminded of the fact that he,…

After viewing The Poseidon Adventure (1972) it’s interesting to examine the film and it’s intertextuality. For example at the time of the film’s release it was hot off the heels of the decades first big disaster film hit Airport (1970). That film was a massive box office success and was nominated for many academy awards including best picture. Making another disaster movie after Airport makes perfect sense since both films were based off popular novels and boasted a massive star studded cast. Obviously this string of disaster movies were important to the film industry at the time, since they brought in audiences and were considered critical successes.…
