Poseidon Myths

I’m sure when you think of the ocean, your mind doesn’t immediately jump to horses. It should because the god of the sea is also the god of horses. That’s right, Poseidon is also a god of horses, and earthquakes too. Poseidon is one of the “big three” gods and has a very colorful family history, is often represented through many symbols and drawings, and has a number of interesting myths about him.

Poseidon was one of the big three born to Cronus and Rhea alongside his brothers Zeus, the god of the sky, and Hades, the god of the underworld. He also had three sisters, Hera, Demeter and Hesitia. It said that when he was born his father ate him but Zeus gave Cronus an elixir which made him throw Poseidon back up. Another myth, once again included (dad of the year) Cronus. It was said that “he was concealed by Rhea, after his birth, among a flock of lambs, and his mother pretended to have given birth to a young horse, which she gave to Cronos to devour,” (Atsma). He was born into a very unique family with his parents Cronus and Rhea and alongside his brother Zeus and Hades and three sisters Hera, Demeter and Hestia. His trident is one of the most recognizable trademarks of his character as well as his golden chariot. Finally, Poseidon is the main character in many famous myths from him being eaten by his father to him being able to calm waves as he thunders through the water.
