In The Odyssey, by Homer which takes place in patriarchal Ancient Greece, the female characters are faced with the same problem. Odysseus’s crew is a group made up of many strong men, but Circe still challenges their power by using her sexuality to lure Odysseus and his crew into her caves. Athena, although less powerful than Poseidon, still counters his attacks on Odysseus in order to save Odysseus’s life. Another example are the suitors, a group of about one hundred men that could never be challenged by a single person’s strength, yet Penelope uses tricks to fend off the many suitors and manipulate them to get what she wants.…

Poseidon interferes with the storyline several times in the story. One example is after Odysseus and his company comes into contact with the Cyclops, the son of Poseidon. At the end of this part, Odysseus makes the mistake of telling his name, and Polyphemus gets Poseidon to exact revenge by creating a great storm that almost kills him. Poseidon took action and opposed Odysseus with no hesitation when he damaged and almost killed his son. A similar example is when Odysseus’s men ate the cattle of the sun god Helios, and were punished with death by storm as well.…

Poseidon, the god of the sea, has disliked Odysseus since the beginning of the epic. Poseidon does not like Odysseus because he stabbed his son, Polyphemus, in the eye, blinding him. After Odysseus does this, Polyphemus prays to his father, asking that Odysseus may never return home, and if he does, that he will return only after losing his whole crew and after a long time. After hearing Polyphemus’ prayer, Poseidon makes Odysseus’ journey home lengthened and full of both sorrow and death. While Odysseus is leaving Calypso’s island, Poseidon “[gathers] the clouds, and gripping his trident He [stirs] the sea” (5. 292-294).…
