The official name is the Portuguese Republic and it is located in southwest Europe. The name Portugal derives from the Roman name “Portus Cale.” Portugal is located in the Iberian Peninsula, south west of Spain and north east of the Atlantic Ocean. They started as the county of Portugal after the crusades started reconquering land to the moors. In 1143 Portugal had its independence and started conquering its way south. In 1297 it stabilized its borders, making itself the European country with the oldest borders. After several years, in 1415 Portugal started the Conquistadors Era, its main objective was to find the way to India. The north side is composed of a landscape of mountains, with forests and valleys. The south side of the Tagus River is mainly composed of plains, vineyards and olive trees. The rest of Portugal’s boundaries is ocean. The only country that borders Portugal is Spain. Portugal had lots of colonies in the Conquistadors Era, but they all got their independence. Most of the colonies were in Africa, Asia or South America, some of these, which were Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, India and Timor. Because Spain is so close to Portugal, they influence each other a lot. Therefore, we can say that the country that Portugal influences the most and is the most influenced by is Spain. Also because it is on the European Union it has to follow the regulations decided by the European Parliament; which at this moment, considering the country’s crisis and all the help it is receiving from the European Union, are a lot of these requirements and rules. Portugal looks like a rectangle with rough edges. It started from the “County of Portugal” a little small part in the North of Portugal that was given to one of the crusaders and years after years of ruling the land from the Moors, Portugal got entitled a country and got this shape.
