Portugal Influence On The Old World

Decent Essays
Portugal was the country that created the Atlantic Slave Trade. It led to the slavery that happened in America which is what people mostly recognize. Although times were harsh for slaves who had no choice but to work and had no say, it was an extravagant period in time because the small country of Portugal was able to impact the world in that way. Without the Atlantic Slave Trade, there would be no diversity in the Old World and many minorities existing today would not be there, especially since those of African/Latin descent are the legacy of those slaves. Portugal used their resources in a way that worked in their favor for a long epoch. Portugal is truly a salient part of history.

    20. How does Landes contrast the Portuguese with the Spanish? Spanish conquests had many differences with Portugal. The Spaniards had no competition when searching for new lands, a simple navigation system, went on a search for treasures, and claimed the land through material items. The Portuguese claimed the land by points on maps, showed possession by means of discovery, searched for profits from trade rather than treasure, and used astronomy and geometry as means for navigating the seas.…

The world wouldn't be the way it is today if it wasn't for slavery. African slavery was an outstanding quality to the British empire because slavery shaped the new world of Americas. Initially, when the British defeated the peoples of Eastern North America (Indians), they had destroyed many Native Indians and caused an outbreak of diseases. Those natives who survived through the conquest of guns and diseases declined to work with the defeaters or on the plantations they produced. This led the natives to run away for freedom or submitting themselves to new diseases so that they wouldn't have to work as prisoners.…

The European Exploration of Louisiana and the Mississippi had some similar and different techniques used than in the exploration of Brazil. The French once they landed in the Louisiana and Mississippi area stated to barter with the natives. The French were looking for gold, silver, and anything that was shinny. The Portuguese sailors got off their ships and started enslaving the natives to work in mines, and the Portuguese sailors took the women and raped them. These two ways of first meetings between the Portuguese and French with the natives were entirely different since the French took more of a friendly route of taking land away from the Natives.…

France, Spain, England, Netherlands, and Portugal had set out exploration for many different things, such as wealth, land, religious freedom, and many other reasons. These countries had been fairly successful on the finding of many new things, such as the astrolabe, the compass, and some additions to boats that made them overall better. I know that we can find more if we just keep exploring. Portugal had had a major impact on the world by setting the groundwork for other countries to sail. Portugal and as well as Spain had started to sail to find sea routes to Asia for trade, which they had found, Huzzah, and had sought out and sailed for more stuff soon after.…

In general, slavery played a major part in American colonization and became the standard for all colonies and the African American slaves were heavily populated in the Northern and Southern colonies because of the Southern colonies had tobacco plantations and they needed laborers to work their land so, they can make a profit. In short, the Atlantic Slave Trade was established by the Spanish colonists in the Sixteenth century to help solve a need and because they were the most experience sea mariners during that time (Robin, Kelley, Lewis, 2005, p. 7). Therefore, slaves became the cheapest laborers in the colonies and this forced labor continue for centuries and some people of the colonies began to believe that this was the way of life. The…

From 1492 when Columbus first “discovered” the Americas, Iberian colonisation of the native Amerindian peoples had begun. Already inhabited by the native peoples, the Spanish and Portuguese begun the task of conquering through killing, enslaving and bringing the natives under their rule and power. This large and expansive conquest of Central and South America killed conceivably as much as 90% of the natives in little under 200 years, due to the introduction of old world disease and the power of the Iberian military weapons and literacy over the new world. Old World Diseases such as Smallpox, Yellow Fever, Influenza and Measles, as well as potentially Tuberculosis, Syphilis, Malaria and Gonorrhea, spread throughout the Americas with a deadly…

The presence of Christianity in the Portuguese Latin American colonies was minuscule during the nascent stages of colonization. The Portuguese kingdoms often only sent two to three friars or priests on the ships traveling to the colonies. The indigenous people that were encountered were perceived to be blank slates. This perception of the indigenous was held to justify spreading Christianity. In Latin America, the colonizers and priests held on to their own agenda for the colonies.…

Contact with Europeans exposed Native Americans to diseases against which they had not developed resistance -- small pox, measles, chickenpox, influenza, malaria, and yellow fever. Economically, the population decrease brought by the Columbian Exchange (decimation of Native American populations by disease) indirectly caused a drastic labor shortage throughout the Americas, which eventually resulted in the establishment of African slavery on a vast scale in the Americas. Europeans, who settled in the New World, also chose to cultivate Old World crops, such as wheat and apples. Europeans in sowing these crops also inadvertently introduced various Old World weeds. The New World's greatest contribution to the Old was in crop plants.…
