Portugal (Decriminalization of Drugs) In 2001, the small European country of Portugal decriminalized all drugs use. This allows any type of drug to be used by anyone that lives in Portugal. The government, in media reports, says that drug-related deaths, violent crimes, and HIV infections have dropped. Drug abusers in Portugal now receive intensive health treatment, rather than being charged as a criminal.

I am not a user of marijuana, but it should be the only drug used for recreational use. Marijuana and cigarettes are highly similar but marijuana gives you a buzz feeling. Other drugs that involve injections or pills should not be allowed. These drugs lead to overdosing which then causes death. The reason why it leads to overdosing is because a normal person with little education on drugs is not going to know the correct amount to take. So when they take a small amount of their drug and they feel no effect they are going to use a little bit more on top of what they already put inside their body causing them to overdoes. I do not think the United States can have the same outcome as Portugal and other counties. Yes, decriminalizing drugs has done a lot of positive things for Portugal like reducing arrests, increase in drug treatment, and preventing less crime. These are all great accomplishments for Portugal, but I do not have faith in the United States to be able to control the people. I believe that decriminalizing all drugs will do the opposite effect as it did in Portugal. I think it will increase crime rates and deaths due to overdosing from the drug.
