Imagine that when our thumbs hit a letter on our phone, consequently an innocent bystander becomes injured or killed by an irresponsible driver. This is what the Road Safety Association of Indonesia presents with their image named “Car”. This image is on an ad website that states it was by illustrator Faddy Ravydera and published on October 2014. Within the image, the message given is “Stop Killing While Driving” which replaces the usual phrase “Stop Texting While Driving.” The depiction persuades the viewer to divert from any sort of texting and driving. The viewer should also uphold to the responsibilities that come with the privilege of driving. Otherwise, those ill-advised actions will lead to major damage. The main subject depicted concentrating on texting and driving, so objects like the thumb and car is made considerably bigger than the supplementary people that are represented as the letters on a standard keyboard. Next are the actions demonstrated between the two. The thumb/car is heading straight for the letter R or the man on the bike, that action appeals to two different angles; one perspective showing the thumb of the person texting and the other foreshadowing a possible accident that is happening in front of various bystanders. Each individual character is also making some sort of action, whether it be trying to get the driver’s attention, shown by the letter E, or a general expression of shock and fear shown by the rest. Lastly, the major stylistic choice, the composition is heavily used within the visual and is what makes most of the appeal of the argument. As stated before, the bystanders are all arranged as a letter. From left to right, the letters QWERTY are made as two workers with heavy equipment, secondly a family of 4 walking and holding hands, next a traffic director trying to direct the oncoming car, then the man on the bike who is being approached by the car, and lastly the old beggar who is sway his hands in the air; the other letter that is the letter T which is not depicted as a person but instead as some sort of lamp post instead. Therefore, this visual slightly appeals towards ethos and logos while establishing heavily towards pathos. The credibility is shown by who is sponsoring the ad, the Road Safety Association, but that is as far as that appeal goes. The logos can be interpreted by the message in the top left corner, “Stop Killing While Driving”, it is a fact that people die from negligent drivers that focus more on phones rather than the road ahead of them. Lastly, the appeal to pathos is shown throughout. From the various stylistic choices that were arranged, and the red color of the word “Kill” overriding the rest of the usual phrase, to the detailed facial expression on all of the characters in the visual witnessing an accident that is about to occur. The argument introduced from the argument is classical, the various stylistic choices help make a claim and the details help further push the message that
