The majority of portable tiny home builders tend to use recycled materials as they are cheaper and sometimes even free. Kristin Davis writes in “Tiny Home is Modern Housing” “Kristopher Angstadt said “We build professionally and under code,” just as if they were constructing a regular house.” When building a traditional home there is a very specific set of regulations that one has to follow during the construction of the home. The type of wood, the type of nails and screws, and down to size of the home are all regulated through the government. Portable tiny homes don’t have this scrutiny, imagination and ability are all the limits that are set, beyond height and weight for road use. A builder of a portable tiny home can use recycled windows, that don’t meet the current regulatory standards required for new home construction. Many windows used were found, donated, or purchased from an antiques/junk yard dealer. Recycled wood is also a way of saving cost of the tiny home construction that one could not use in new home construction. Visit the landfill or stop by where a building is being torn down and one can find most of the wood they would need. Recycled tin can even be used for the roof. With the exception of the composting toilets, let’s be real who wants a used composting toilet, most everything can be made, remade, or reused during construction of a portable …show more content…
Smaller spaces means smaller utility bills. In the article "Home, Squeezed Home: Living In a 200- Square Foot Space." Emily Wax writes “From 1950 to 2000, the size of the average American house increased by 230 percent, but home sizes have been declining since 2007, according to "The Small Spaces Trend.” A tiny home space does not require as much cost to maintain as a larger traditional home space. The money saved in utilities could eventually pay for the portable tiny house. In a tiny home there are several options for keeping utility cost down. Solar panels and small wind generators with a battery pack tend to be most commonly used for electricity. For heating a small wood burning stove, propane, or a kerosene heater are the most commonly used sources. The rise in the number of smaller homes currently being built has also generated a market for small electric dual purpose heating and cooling units which can be even cheaper to buy and use than the traditional methods currently being used. A tankless water heater saves on space and overall energy cost for the tiny home water heating. Going with a tankless water heaters can cost slightly more up front, but will help save money overall due to not needing to maintain a set amount of hot water in the heater. Smaller spaces just don’t require the costly energy need to heat or cool the overall space. The smaller overall space of a portable tiny
