Summary: Porphyria is an uncommon, genetically caused disease, which makes the blood pigment in hemoglobin to not properly be changed into material for your body to use. The title porphyria originates from the modern latin term porphyrin which are pigments containing heme or chlorophyll with molecules that have a flat ring of four connected heterocyclic groups and occasionally a metal atom. There are two different forms of porphyria; acute porphyria and cutaneous porphyria. Acute porphyria affects the nervous system, while cutaneous porphyria causes skin symptoms. Some symptoms of "acute porphyria include: severe abdominal pain, swelling of the abdomen (abdominal distention), pain in your chest, legs or back, constipation or diarrhea, vomiting, insomnia, heartbeat you can feel (palpitations), high blood pressure,"("Porphyria" 1-2). Regarded as a brilliant sinister dramatic monologue, 'Porphyria's Lover' by Robert Browning, challenges the perception of it's readers, in this case, creating a persona that is driven mad by his growing obsession throughout the poem. The poem is about a character who has a a difficult relationship with the woman he loves because she is unable to love him fully. It carefully illustrates the struggle for control between the two lovers drawing the reader into their twisted relationship with evidence of pure evil. To what extent is a Marxist reading of "My Last Duchess" and "Porphyria 's Lover" useful in opening up potential meanings? Ultimately, the source of tragedy in both 'My Last Duchess ' and 'Porphyria 's Lover ', is the capitalistic societal structures that provoke the oppression of its people. Though this subjugation may arise from the corrupt economic system that Marxism critiques, Browning 's scrutiny of society may also delve into social barriers such as feminism, and the adverse psychiatric affect capitalism has on the populace. Browning relied on his inherited wealth to freely write poetry, prompting the argument that he represents Marxist ideology through his conformity to the idea that 'your social circumstance determine much ' -…

Browning creates the impression that love is a destructive force. The narrator kills Porphyria because of his love for her, commenting how her devotion ‘made my heart swell’ so he ‘wound’ her hair around her throat and ‘strangled her’. Literally, the narrator means he was overcome by his adoration for Porphyria and decided to show that by ending her life, as well as how Porphyria’s sincere confession has gotten her killed. These acts of love both clearly show how disastrous love can be. Metaphorically, the narrator could potentially be suggesting that love can only lead to ruin, especially seeing as during the Victorian times people married to increase wealth, fame and social status instead of love.…

The poem “Porphyria’s Lover” by Robert Browning was written in 1836. Although the poem was written so long ago, it is known to be a very dramatic and ironic poem due to the speaker’s theme of obsession. In Uma Kukathas’s ‘Critical Essay on “Porphyria’s Lover”’ it is stated and agreed upon that “"Porphyria 's Lover," is a poem in which a madman recounts to himself the events of the night before that end with his murdering the woman he loves.” (Kutkathas, Critical Essay on.). Throughout the poem there are multiple aspects that have a major impact on the theme such as the poets’ use of syntax and diction in the dramatic monolog, the speaker’s borderline personality disorder, and the tone the speaker uses towards his obsession of Porphyria.…
