It is impossible to talk about the internet and the commercial sex trade without addressing the connections between pornography and sex trafficking. At this point in time, our society is in an odd position when it comes to this issue. There are many people in our country who view sex trafficking as a great evil and something we should fight against, and yet they see pornography as simply another genre of entertainment. As a nation who claims to seek ways to oppose sex trafficking, it is imperative that we understand its connection to pornography. What we must first understand is that pornography, simply because of its very nature, drives the demand for sex trafficking. Per a report by the Shared Hope International, on the demand for sex trafficking, “pornography is the primary gateway to the purchase of humans for commercial sex.” In another report by the Fight the New Drug (FTND) CEO Clay Olsen, who said that “porn fuels the demand for the sex trade” this is often done the way that is not seen by those who view porn.
