Pornography is harmful to relationships, deceptive because it gives unrealistic expectations, and addictive in and of itself. Although it is viewed by many as normal and natural, pornography is dangerous, and more dangerous for adolescents because of their brains’ physical immaturity. Increased normality of pornography and easier access has made it more present than ever. Many view pornography as a normal and natural behavior, however pornography is harmful to relationships, deceptive because it gives unrealistic expectations of sex and sexuality, and is addictive. Michael Flood studied the multifaceted consequences of pornography on children and adolescents in his article The Harms of Pornography Exposure Among Children and Young People in 2009. The study acknowledges that children and adolescents are naturally sexually curious and ought to be educated at an age-appropriate level. However, as children and adolescents are denied proper and adequate education regarding sex and sexuality, they often turn to the internet and therefore pornography. Pornography, though sexual in nature, is a harmful tool for sex education for many reasons. One extremely harmful result of pornography is the perception of women and girls. Numerous studies have shown that sexual media and pornography influence women and girls to see themselves as sexual objects. They determine their worth in terms of physical beauty subject to the judgment and valuation of others (APA 2010). By placing the value of their identity on being sexually acceptable to others, these women and girls are likely to find themselves in unhealthy and possibly abusive relationships. Pornography encourages this through depicting sexist and hostile behavior towards women. These images are likely to validate adolescents’ unhealthy and sexist perceptions of sex and relationships (Flood 2009). This validation of unhealthy self-perceptions harms women and girls by creating outrageous and unmatchable standards and by promoting the idea that a woman’s value is based on her sexuality. Viewing these behaviors harms men and boys as well by forming unrealistic and extremely sexualized ideals of who women are and should be. One study correlates frequent usage of pornography among adolescents with negative changes in their disposition, including, “diminished trust in intimate partners, the abandonment of

Since it is easier to access, it also accounts for a lot of female objectification leading to the acceptance of sexual violence in our society. Sexual material, in this case porn, contributes to sexual violence today. “Exposure to pornography helps to sustain young people’s adherence to sexist and unhealthy notions of sex and relationships. And, especially among boys and young men who are frequent consumers of pornography, including of more violent materials, consumption intensifies attitudes supportive of sexual coercion and increases their likelihood of perpetrating assault. While children and young people are sexual beings and deserve age-appropriate materials on sex and sexuality, pornography is a poor, and indeed dangerous, sex educator” (The harms of pornography exposure among children and young people).…

The cognitive and emotional consequences state that sexualization and objectification undermine a person’s confidence with her own body, leading to emotional and self-image problems, such as shame and anxiety (APA, 2007). In mental and physical health consequences, researchers have linked sexualization with the three most common mental health problems diagnosed in girls and women--eating disorders, low self-esteem, and depression (APA, 2007). As far as sexual development goes, research suggests that sexualization has negative impact on girls’ abilities to develop a healthy sexual self-image (APA, 2007). Women are never told that they do not need to be sexual beings in order to be a “woman” and that these roles of women in society are unrealistic and not normal.…

According to the ADA “…attorney Janis Wolak, psychologist Kimberly Mitchell, PhD, and Finkelhor, of the UNH center, found that 42 percent of a nationally representative sample of 1,500 Internet users ages 10 to 17 had been exposed to online porn in the last year, with two-thirds reporting only unwanted exposure.” Therefore, more than half were exposed to pornography possibly by their friends, and the remainder found it by themselves. Young people are being exposed to a manipulated visual sexual stimulus and are treating themselves and their future partners, based on what they are seeing. Because parents feel uncomfortable talking with their children about sex education and most public schools have no universally, medically correct curriculum, the youth of today are suffering in confusion that can result to dangerous situations.…

In order to make women into a commodity to be consumed, women are “objectified” or “to treat that person as your property, to deny him or her autonomy and use him or her as a tool for your own purposes, to make that person into a kind of consumable object or replacement commodity” (Caputi, 2015:380). Society views this behaviour as disturbing and revolting as one of the most vulnerable groups in society is being exploited for pleasure and gratification. Furthermore, child pornography is routinely displayed in art exhibits, articles, books and online for the world to see. As a result, it normalizes the behaviour and desensitize its users to the reality of the children displayed. The exploitation of minors has no redeemable value in this our civilized population.…
