Porcine Stress Syndrome PSS is a very serious disease and is not to be taken lightly. There are quite a few major symptoms of PSS. Porcine Stress Syndrome also has some diseases that are similar and can be as dangerous and deadly. The hog industry has come up with some ways to keep this gene from continuing in the pig industry. Porcine Stress Syndrome, or PSS, is a genetically transmitted myopathy (when muscle fibers don't function correctly)triggered by severe stress or excitement. Pigs with PSS tend to be leaner and heavily muscled. The pigs with a weak cardiovascular system can become overheated easily and can, or will, collapse under these intense situations. PSS pigs will tend to have PSE, or Pale, Soft, Exudative meat, that is highly unwanted by consumers. …show more content…
They are as follows; muscle tremors (located more in the back muscles), twitching in the face, a rapid breathing rate, and red, blotchy skin. Pigs will die within 20 minutes of PSS occurring. Even though PSS is a serious disease of its own there are some similar to it. One is called Hypocalcaemia, which is low blood calcium levels and is very dangerous to lactating sows. Mulberry heart disease, is when a pig has a vitamin E deficiency. Pyelonephritis, is another disease in pigs, this is an inflammation of the kidneys and when occurring the same time as Cystitis, which is an inflammation of the bladder, can be very deadly.
