In William Zinsser’s, “How to Write a Memoir”, he gives some advice, “Think small”,” Be yourself, “It’s your story” (Zinsser 2, 4, 6). The advice helps writers tell their story and say what they want. Most memoirs follow these guidelines, others don’t. In Maya Van Wagenens’ memoir “Popular”, she uses Zinsser’s writing advice from her younger voice. Zinsser stated “The best memoirs are written from a younger voice”. Maya Wagenen does this in her memoir. In “Popular”, Maya says, “Ariana died when I was six, on the ninety ninth day of her life” (Wagenen62).
