There has been countless research on the increasing popularity framing concept in media and its application by the media. The concept of framing as it relates to media, is based on focusing on the mere essence of an issue or a certain event and then creating and molding the story in order to influence how the consumer processes the information. The framing theory was first put forth by Erving Goffman (Goffman,). Goffman stated that people will interpret what goes on around the world through their primary framework. This means that if one only watches only one media outlet, they will interpret the world as it is solely based on how that outlet interprets the story. The media is a cornerstone institution in the United States. Since the media broadcast stories that they deemed to be important to consumers, the news is very influential with the message that each outlet puts forth. One influential way that the media shapes public opinion is by framing issues and events in a particular way. This notion of framing is defined in two stages: frame-building and frame-setting. Frame-building refers to factors and structural qualities of news. This involves the factors between journalist and the elites. News outlets like CNN and Fox news are notorious being paid by the US government to selectively report news stories in order to push an agenda. One instance of framing came after the development of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. The ISIL started to receive attention leading up to and after President Obama authorized an airstrike. American news outlets often limit, themselves to cover only dramatic overseas events and this even was no exception from criticism. ISIS is even more extreme than other jihadist terrorist groups and the media has framed the ISIS threat differently. Left leaning news outlets like CNN, described ISIS and other violent groups as rebels while Fox News described these same groups as radical Islamic terrorist.
