I wanted to incorporate Popular Culture as an Introduction to the broad topic that is Microaggressions. I decided I wanted to focus on the Television show Glee, because of the various identities and sexualities portrayed. I chose Blaine because something I don’t think is talked about enough is the idea of who can play characters with LGBTQ+ Identities. There are many variations to this long acronym. I will be looking at this acronym as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer + identities that do not necessarily fall within these categories.
Another Popular Culture Reference I wanted to incorporate was the Movie Mean Girls. I chose the character of Janis Ian because She in addition to many other girls in the film have entries written about them in the Burn book. Within the Movie, Mean Girls, the theme of bullying is present.
My final Popular Culture Reference is a Buzzfeed article written by Heben Nigatu called 19 LGBT Microaggressions You Hear On A Daily Basis. How many of you have heard this Microaggression used in your daily life?
I have experienced another Microaggression recently which happened this Semester which involved a friend of mine making a Facebook Status about Coming Out. I saw the post on Facebook and wrote a comment expressing that I was happy for them and that I support them. Hours had passed and then I found out the status was a joke written by friend number two on friend number one’s account. Friend one also commented something along the lines of that he hoped he didn’t offend anyone. I was personally offended.
I also know of some resources available on campus. They include: The Office of Diversity and Inclusion, The Rainbow Dragon Center, Hendrix Clinic and Counseling Center, and The Community Outreach
