Popul Vuh's Creation Myths

Decent Essays
Many societies have creation myths explaining their origins. The Japanese accounts regarding the creation of earth and the arrival of human society began to be archived in the eight century C.E., the early chroniclers had been exposed to Chinese writings on the subject and were likely influenced by Chinese founding myths. There are significant differences in the Japanese approach, which places more emphasis on the role that nature deities played than on sage-kings. The Japanese account also linked the creation of Japanese islands with appearance of the imperial line. The Japanese believed when Heaven and Earth first parted, there were these "Three Deities" that proceeded to perform the commencement of creation; yin and yang then developed; and the Two Spirits (Izanami and Izanagi) became the ancestors of all things.

One of them is strictly Japanese, the Shinto religion, while the other is Buddhism, which originated in India, traveled to China, and then to Japan. The creation story however, reflects not much of the religion, but political organization in Japan. Although there are gods, the gods birth the imperial families, which therefore rule Japan. In the Japanese creation story, time starts out with 3 deities, which appear out of light, called The Spirit Master of the Center of Heaven, August Wondrously Producing Spirit, and Divine Wondrously Producing Ancestor.…

There are interesting similarities that cosmologies share with each other concerning the creation of man and its surroundings. Most of these myths mention having a creator who created every living organism. Who also establishes order and guides men on what they should do throughout their life. The reason for there being so many similarities between these stories is because the people that continue to tell them and pass them on might share the same concerns as others. Although these people are from different religions, geographical locations or ethnicity they all question the creation of the universe and want to be in certainty.…
