Matt was once innocent and happy in the house in the fields, however, he is now growing depressed that he does not have children to be friends with.

Tam Lin expressed genuine worry as to Maria and Matt’s whereabouts while they were watching Felicia and Tom in the computer room.
Though Matt disagreed with Esperanza’s book, he felt that it was valuable because Tam Lin gave it to him.
“Tam Lin had taught him that it was foolhardy to show weakness” (Farmer 173).
Tam Lin’s comments in the garden had set Matt’s understanding of his purpose in life in motion
In this section, Matt discovers the power of love that Tam Lin experiences for Matt. Tam Lin loves Matt dearly, and tries to give him all of the tools for success. From this, the power of love can clearly be seen in The House of the Scorpion.
Matt’s affection with Maria becomes deeper and more complex.
Maria genuinely cared about getting Matt to speak again after his tenure in the pen.
Matt was devastated when Maria had to return to school.
Matt could not unnerve Maria by growling, and she criticized he as she pleased.
Matt moved Maria’s place card at El Patron’s birthday party so that he could sit next to her. However, Maria was not pleased, given Matt had also moved Tom’s card to the children’s
