He was a man who used his voice to publicize trade. He spoke out on controversial issues at the time at hand rather than talking about diplomacy. This stunned political leaders as well as everyday people. Although as time advanced, the Pope did something that no one would ever consider to happen. He issued a formal apology to women, Jews, Muslims and other religious groups for the wrongdoings by the Catholics associated with the church in the past. This revolutionary apology was only one detail in his quest to support peace and reconciliation. The Pope was a strong advocate for forgiveness and peace. When the Pope entered St.Peter’s Square to address an audience, he was the victim of an assassination attempt. Mehmet Ali Agca, a Turkish man shot him in front of a stunned crowd. After being taken to the hospital, it was found out that the Pope needed an entire blood transfusion. His injuries were so severe that he was given the Last Rites as held onto his dear life. It took him a long time to recover from his wounds, but he never fully recovered his health to its full potential. Nobody to this day knows who was behind the assassination attempt. A popular theory about the assassination was that is was constructed by the Soviet Union Hierarchy who were extremely concerned by the liberating effect that the Polish Pope was having in his homeland and in other communist countries.
