Pope Francis has even gone as far as calling money, “The devil’s dung”, in accordance to his dislike for the material greed and treachery it brings out in people everywhere, even inside the Catholic Church (Mercado). With the Vatican bank currently holding eight billion dollars in assets, it is tempting for people within the church to take advantage of that wealth (Garcia). One measure Pope Francis took to limit the greed and corruption inside the church was appointing a commission to seek out corruption and money laundering within the Vatican Back (Mercado). This action limits or punishes those who would seek to squander this wealth on themselves. Pope Francis had already such success when he suspended Bishop Franz-Peter Tebartz-van Elst, of Germany. This Bishop nicknamed, “The Bling Bishop”, was forced to resign after spending approximately 43 million dollars on a new residence and complex in his Limburg diocese in western Germany. At the same time this bishop was reducing salaries for staff in the name of financial austerity (McElwee). By taking measures to control of wealth within the Catholic Church, Pope Francis has positively impacted the church by making it less corrupt and more consensus of its spending.
