It addressed relations to the modern world and the church. “The Council was called in part to address the declining fortunes of Catholicism in much of continental Europe…it issued sixteen documents, which…represent a judiciously worded repudiation of the militant opposition to modernity that had characterized the papacy since the time of the French Revolution” (Tentler, 37). The purpose of the Second Vatican Council was to give direction for the life of the church and encourage diversity in language and practice. The Second Vatican Council restored and renewed self-understanding of the church, and established its relationship with other Christian traditions and religions around the world. It was called to reaffirm the role of teachings in the church. The council came up with 16 documents with a common theme of reconciliation. The Cardinals knew the church needed someone different, some type of reform to “catch-up” to the world today and that, soon to be, Pope Francis would be able to pull the church out of its 200 years in hiding.
The Church Today
The church today is torn. It is caught in a schism of its own between traditional teachings and the modern world. The church is behind, way behind. Many issues arise when talking about the Roman Catholic Church today such as priesthood, birth control, homosexuality, and the role of women in the church.
Pope Francis
As the 226th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Francis serves as the first, non-European, Latin American Pope. Similar to John XXIII, Pope Francis loved the people more than power. He was known as the Bishop of the Slums and even decided to work in some of the most shantytowns. He believes his mission is to go out to where the poor people are and not wait for them to come to him. Although coming from a wealthy family, Pope Francis is accredited with being a very humble man to even go as far as living in an apartment style home as opposed to the mansions his predecessors would reside
