Racism and Classism Through a Catholic Lens The 21st century has been a period of rapid growth. We have technology that we could not even fathom, discoveries that have the potential to cure people, even inventions that miraculously make our lives easier, just when we thought that was impossible. With an ever evolving world, comes ever changing views and values. Just as justice continues to work toward the common good, injustices live on so as to continue the oppression of certain groups of people. Speaking of an advancing world, Pope Francis frequently takes to common social media platform, Twitter, and once tweeted, “Inequality is the root of social evil” (Bergoglio, 2014). Two prominent inequalities that plague American society is racism and classism to which the education system is no stranger to. Racism is discrimination based on the notion that each race possess attributes that are unique to a specific subgroup of people, hereby denouncing a particular race as superior. This too ties in with “human dignity” which is, “a human being’s inherent value and worthiness.” (Kolvenback, 2000, p.1). Pope Francis relays this conviction when he once said, “We need to see each child as a gift to be welcomed, cherished and protected…” It is important to keep these notions in mind when discussing oppressors, as it is easy to deem them immoral and move on. We must recognize that even those who seem to work against Gods teachings, are capable of good. That they too deserve forgiveness and should be granted the ability to mend and rectify. If we are to recall our communal nature and realize that it is through our relationships with others that we find our true selves, maybe then there will be change (Groome, 1996). For it is feelings within the heart, and thoughts within the mind, that manifest themselves into feasible
