 The speakers for the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Dr. Stephen Colecchi, Director of the Office of International Justice and Peace, and Mark Rohlena the Director, Office of Domestic Social Development spoke about Pope Francis’ Encyclical Letter Laudato Si’ on Care for our Common Home. The Encyclical declares the Catholic Church’s stance on climate change. Further, the Encyclical’s purpose as moral guidance for policy should influence economic policy as well. Moreover, any measures should not displace the heritage, culture, indigenous rights of communities. Furthermore, the conversation about addressing climate change is not primarily about policy solutions. In addition, Pope Francis raised questions about Carbon Cap-and-Trade, and the future environmental impact it could have on the world. Consequently, the dilemma environmentalists’ face is that politicians think in the immediate future. And as a consequence, the public must make public officials realize the long-term effects of environmental …show more content…
Furthermore, extracted industries such as oil and gas extraction, mining, dredging and quarrying lead to the destruction of the planet. Nonetheless, the Pope is not against profits or the markets, granted, prioritizing the protection of indigent rights take precedence. Additionally, Pope Francis recommends progressively replacing fossil fuels, thus, reducing carbon emissions. Nonetheless, these efforts require honest cooperation and assistance from developed countries. On the other hand, developing countries must make efforts to reduce their carbon footprint as well, creating harmonious relationships between the poor and their environment. Further, the markets should diversify its industries so that they will have a less detrimental impact to the environment. For this reason, human beings need to change their current environmental

The Pope proclaims, “in no uncertain terms that the climate change now underway is caused by human activity and that the burning of fossil fuels must stop.” The truth on how the Pope feels about climate changes led to Jeb Bush proclaiming that the pope is not a scientist, he’s a religious leader and he said, “Put aside Pope Francis on the subject of any political conversation.” Also, other Republican resisters besides Bush says that the pope should “leave science to the…

There are two main viewpoints on any environmental issue, the modernist perspective and the neo-traditionalist perspective. The two perspectives greatly contrast each other, as they take completely opposite sides of the argument in any environmental issue. This was represented in the lecture by Professor Mark Boyer about Considering Environmental Values. For the purpose of this essay, I will specifically be talking about the issue of Climate change, and how both perspectives view this environmental issue. The modernist perspective consists of the optimists, they conclude that our continuous technological advancement is key to future success and will bring about solutions to any problems.…

Modern times offer a very diverse way of expressing oneself. The expression of a single person who consumes more than they need may not be enough to hurt the environment; however, the overproduction of harmful waste from big business is big enough to impact the environment. Critically acclaimed author Anna Lappé describes the climate crisis through the food production industry in a sector of industry where people rarely scrutinize in her article “The Climate Crisis at the End of Our Fork.” In a very different, yet scarily similar way Carolyn Merchant metaphorically describes the problems with modern human tendency and desires through the image of a shopping mall in “Eden Commodified.”…

Pope Francis was able to do so through the use of anaphora, metaphors, and anecdotes. Throughout this speech Pope Francis was able to successfully and effectively present his argument that the collective world has a responsibility to fix our nation's problems by making mention of current world issues. In relevance to his speech many events that have occurred within the last decade relate to what was mentioned. One major piece of context is that of the Syrian refugee crisis, currently occurring within Europe, Pope Francis’s home continent.…

What Rachel Carson’s position would be on the debate on the existence of climate change Rachel Carson was very concerned about the relation of human beings and nature – the environment; she believed that the actions human beings and things that they released to the environment had a long-lasting effect on nature that could be determinantal to generations to come. This was her greatest idea and one that has clearly not been reflected in the current-day debate on climate change especially by people such as Donald Trump. In this regard, it is apparent that she would have position on this debate on the existence of climate change. Her position would be that climate change indeed exists and that human beings, through their actions, are the greatest…

As an Environmental Studies student I have come to realize everything has an impact on the way this world works and many of those impacts are causes of human-environment interactions. Before reading this book, I had a basic concept about energy and the main complexities that came with it. As humans we have created a web of relationships that form our complex society and allows us to function efficiently, however, it is that connected that strains global energy needs. The smallest of changes could have a butterfly effect on something greater in the future. In order to resolve our energy crisis we must successfully incorporate awareness of energy conservation, global sustainability and economics into our energy programs.…

Introduction According to Warren & Bennis (2010), “The constancy of change that drives efforts to reinvent government bureaucracies, church hierarchies, and business practices call for audacious leaders who take a stand for what they believe in” (p.29). As a practicing Catholic, I have noticed that the Church is continuously challenged to redefine the role of the Church in our ever changing society under the leadership of Pope Francis. While it is relatively easy to appreciate the public function of the Catholic Church in the area of social services, health care, and development projects, there is a great divide amongst Catholics and non-Catholics on issues such as women in leadership roles, morality, and innovation. As a result, Pope…

In The USA the number of co2 emissions which is one of the greenhouse gasses, is extremely high in comparison to other countries, this is an indication of higher demand vs actual need. Although co2 emissions are naturally occurring, human activity greatly increases this and disturbs the atmosphere. Ways in which human activity contributes to high co2 emissions includes the burning of fossil fuels. In order to have things like electricity we need to burn fossil fuels, although renewable sources of energy have risen and may soon help reduce the amount of fossil fuels that are burned. We are aware that renewable energy is important and we are currently working on ways to maximize the amount of energy we can extract from these sources including solar power and not disposing of materials that can be re-used such as wood. Things like transportation also contribute to co2 emissions, this may be anything from everyday commute to transporting goods throughout the…

Global warming has become an increasingly popular topic for discussion among economists because of the human activity that is contributing to the rising pollution in today’s society. Economists such as William Nordhaus in his article, “After Kyoto: Alternative Mechanism to Control Global Warming,” have argued that a carbon tax is the most efficient form of action to reduce carbon emissions. On the other hand, other economists such as Robert Stavins argues in his article, “Addressing Climate Change with a Comprehensive U.S Cap and Trade System,” that a cap and trade system should be implemented instead of a carbon tax. While both of these market instruments have their strengths and weaknesses, another popular approach is combining these two market instruments into a hybrid approach with a cap and trade system complemented with a price floor or ceiling or maybe even both. I will analyze all three approaches and talk about each market instrument’s strengths and weaknesses.…

Nowadays, humans are over consuming not only renewable resources, but also non-renewable resources without control. The world has become unsustainable since people’s bad habits are depleting the natural resources much faster than nature can form them, and also government laws are not strict enough to stop industries in degrading the environment by overproducing their products. It is important to create awareness for the future generations by emphasizing how important is to adopt the three high value priorities which are recycle, reduce and reuse to have a sustainable environment and apply them constantly. I based my project on these three values as the main purpose to make a difference in this unsustainable world. I participated in the Columbus Service Day, where volunteers went to different places to help not only the community, but also the environment.…

Religion has had a lot of interaction and harmony with the environment for generations. Humanity has a God given task; environmental care. The quick and gradually changing state of the environment from bad to worse is a growing concern for communities and nations across the globe. Despite parties that try to deny the fact that there are serious environmental facts, there is enough proof out there. The earth as an asset is being depleted on a very massive scale and the rate of pollution and degradation to its health is correlated with the activities.…

The question “Who Am I?” has many possible answers unique to everyone. The answer for me lies in several different ideas from the texts that I will cite, including what defines me mentally, religiously, and socially. The first thing that defines me as an individual is the idea of only controlling what is under my control. Epictetus writes in The Art of Living, “Outside our control, however, are such things as what kind of body we have, whether we’re born into wealth or strike it rich, how we are regarded by others, and our status in society. We must remember that those things are externals and are therefore not our concern.…
